Greenyard Group's move to recycled woody biomass - 29 Aug 2017

In a positive example of woody biomass being used the right way, frozen vegetable company Greenyard Frozen are set to replace their old gas boilers with thirty-two new biomass units that will be powered by discarded vegetable boxes.

The modular plants are estimated to make overall CO2 emission reductions of around 10,000 tonnes per year.

The process will involve using high temperatures to thermally convert wood waste at the end of its useful life into pellet form. The generated syngas is then used as fuel in a gas engine that powers a generator, with minimal particle emissions and ash as a byproduct. The pellets will be produced on site which will eradicate the CO2-releasing effects of transportation.

The company are currently developing their technology to be fuelled by a range of other recycled materials including nut shells, plastic waste, and discarded tyres.

As opposed to woody biomass that's powered by materials harvested from healthy, growing trees, woody biomass that's produced from recycled materials does not release CO2 that's banked in living plants. It's also a sustainable way to make use of materials that may otherwise be wasted or destroyed in ways that may be damaging to the environment.
